Garlic (Allium sativum)
Garlic has a 5,000 year tradition of
medical use, and it is even mentioned in the Bible. It was widely used in the last two
world wars in hospitals and battlefields to treat infection and prevent gangrene. It is
even nicknamed as the "Russian penicillin." It fell out of favor after the
discovery of penicillin and antibiotics but in the last 20 years there have been thousands
of studies related to Garlic by reputable research organizations isolating the important
nutritional and pharmaceutical properties which may have direct benefits against
hypertension, high cholesterol, heavy metal intoxication, infectious diseases,
free-radical damage, cancer and immune deficiency diseases. Some recent studies show that Garlic is effective in enhancing the overall immune functions and also strengthening and empowering the individual cells of the immune system which explains the reason that the herb is effective against infectious diseases. The following findings indicate some of the studies concerning Garlic: stimulates natural killer cells, increases macrophage activity, enhances lymphocyte activity, may be effective against HIV, inhibits cholesterol production, reduces blood pressure, promotes blood circulation, may reverse atherosclerosis, inhibits tumor growth, blocks carcinogens, "fights" germs such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites, fungi, helps liver inactivate toxic chemicals, renders heavy metals harmless, protects against the damaging effects of radiation and protects against free radical damage. People have a love-hate relationship with Garlic in that some people love it and some people hate it. When combined with the honey, the odor is unmistakable and lasting.
